Accountability

I am tired of fighting God! What would our lives look like if we completely let go and let God be in control? Isn’t that what we sign up for when we are saved? We say to Him, “Here’s my life Lord, do what you wish!” How long does that last?

I think it’s different for all of us. For some, the beginning of our walk is short lived and we tell ourselves that we tried our best. Others will have a really great run in the beginning but eventually wake up one day and realize that it hasn’t even crossed our minds in quite some time. Then there are those that it hits is in waves. We go up and down on this perpetual rollercoaster of walking in our faith. Also, there are those who are able to maintain their paths with God at the forefront of their lives until they’re called home.

We hear of people having accountability partners all of the time. Would it be beneficial if you had one there just to lend support and guidance where your faith is concerned? Someone who you could call daily or a couple of times a week even just to check in and ask “What is something that I can pray about for you today?” It would have to be someone that you respect and trust enough that you both can be raw and vulnerable with one another. You would have to be able to be open and real. Could you open yourself up to being a blessing to one another in your walk?

Let’s keep in mind that this is not like having an accountability partner for working out. There wouldn’t be someone yelling in your face to make you stay on track. One of the things about this is that your walk is yours alone with God. Where He is leading you wont necessarily be the same for me. Could you take constructive criticism from a brother or sister in Christ that is on their own path and feels the call to bless someone with their gifts of love and grace?

How do we start?

  1. You will need to pray about this every step of the way. We don’t pray enough! Prayer isn’t intended to only be before a meal or the words of your pastor at church. It isn’t about your words sounding graceful to someone else. God knows our hearts and what we will pray about before we do. Make yourself available to Him. Take the time to acknowledge to Him your strengths and weaknesses. Yes, God knows what they are but this is more a learning tool for us. It helps us to grow in faith. Prayer is not about sounding pretty but having a relationship with God.
  2. Put yourself out there and ask someone that you can trust and be open with.  An accountability partner will be someone who give you grace in your failures and encouragement in your accomplishments. You will do the same for them. We all, no matter where we are in our walk, need grace and love in our lives. Take the time and get involved. If you don’t know many people in your church or you don’t have a church that you call “home” find one and start attending different activities. It’s going to take some time to find the right person if you don’t have someone in mind already. Again, pray and let God guide you.
  3. Read your Bible and grow in His word. So, basically the bible is intended to be “a textbook or a guide” for our lives. It gives us life stories, explains what we are supposed to be doing, and gives definition to the things we don’t understand. We all can benefit from learning more. I’m not even sure why we don’t make the time to spend in the word of God more than we do. I am just as guilty as most if not more. I am training myself and making a conscious effort to make time. We have so much to gain from reading God’s word. The word is alive! Why not allow it to be alive in us?

What do I mean by the word is alive? It’s ever changing and yet always the same. Pretty confusing, right? It took me quite some time to understand this. In a nutshell, when you read the Bible, what you read may mean something completely different the next time you read it. The physical words are the same obviously but based off of the season you are in alters the meaning that those words take within you. Spend time allowing God to show you where He needs you to focus your studies on and go from there. God Bless you all!
