What does it mean to be humble? From the world’s perspective, humility can point to lack of arrogance or even a feeling of inferiority. I have not found a specific “definition” of humility in Scripture. I have, however, found several verses to help us to have a clear understanding of what it means.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” James 4:10 NLT
Jesus taught us that true greatness is found in humility and serving others, not in seeking position, recognition, or status. He led by example, serving both the people around Him and His disciples. He specifically taught that whoever wants to be first must be “the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35).
Let me be very clear that Jesus never said that we are to lack in self-worth. We are not to take this as a sign of being unimportant or weak. YOU ARE VALUED!!
“Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant to everyone else.” Mark 9:35 NLT
Jesus never taught us to accept abuse from others or ourselves. We often punish ourselves when we feel like we are undeserving. Most of the time, we tend to take abuse from others because we feel like we deserve it. Remember that I am not a Bible Scholar but my thought is that Jesus intends us to humble ourselves to the point we are able to forgive those who wrong us. Don’t be arrogant. When we see ourselves as being more important others we lack the ability to forgive. Let’s face it – God forgives us! He absolutely is NOT inferior!
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3
If we pray, listen, and wait faithfully God will give us all answers we need. Spend time in His word. We are human and we don’t always have the best of patience. Listen to me carefully! If you are listening to the call of God and spreading His word don’t allow the world to shut you down. Extend yourself some grace. Keep working for the Lord. Do not allow yourself to be consumed with selfish ambition. God’s work will be excruciating at times.
The enemy attacks when we are on the right path and making the right decisions. Where does your brain go when you start doubting and let yourself feel guilty or selfish in your current “Kingdom” work? How does that start? When you allow these thoughts and feelings to continue it will grow quickly. You are creating an open opportunity for the enemy to sneak in. Keep yourself in check! Keep yourself in HIS WORD and NOT THIS WORLD.
